Meru Family Mourns Mother of Three Killed in Freak Construction Accident

A family in Meru County is struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a 35-year-old mother whose routine visit to a salon ended in tragedy after a stone fell from a nearby construction site and struck her.

The woman, identified as Irene Kui, had gone to have her hair done in Maua town, an ordinary errand that quickly turned into a fatal incident. According to relatives, a large stone dislodged from an adjacent building under construction, crashed through the roof of the salon, and hit her while she was inside.

Witness accounts indicate the impact was severe. The stone tore through both the iron sheet roofing and ceiling before landing on her, leaving her with critical injuries, including extensive trauma to the head and spine.

She was rushed to hospital and admitted to intensive care, where doctors worked to stabilise her condition. For several days, her family maintained a bedside vigil, hoping she would recover from the injuries. That hope, however, faded as her condition worsened, and she eventually succumbed nearly a week after the incident.

Her death has left behind three young children and a grieving husband, Shadrack Shampompo Ali, as relatives and members of the local community rally around the family. Those close to her described her as devoted to her children and deeply connected to her family, making the loss particularly difficult to process.

A relative who spoke after the incident said the circumstances surrounding the accident raise serious concerns about safety standards at construction sites. The family questioned how building materials could fall from such a height without adequate safeguards, calling for accountability and investigations into the incident.

Reports also indicate that another individual was injured during the same incident and is yet to receive proper medical attention, further intensifying calls for action.

The tragedy has sparked wider concern among residents in the area, many of whom are now questioning enforcement of safety regulations around ongoing construction projects in busy commercial zones. Incidents of falling debris, while rare, are often linked to lapses in site management and protective measures.

As the family prepares for burial arrangements, the focus has shifted from grief alone to a demand for justice. Relatives say they want those responsible for the construction site to be held accountable, not only for Irene’s death but to prevent similar incidents in the future.

For now, what remains is a community shaken by a loss that came without warning. A simple visit to a salon ended in a fatal accident, leaving behind children who must now grow up without their mother and a family searching for answers in the aftermath of a preventable tragedy.
